Gerund is the form of a verb that has the same function as a noun. The form of gerund is "ING" and it's important to take into account, gerunds aren't the tense present continuous. 

RULES: 

  • We can use gerund when the verb is the subject in the sentence, for example: Smoking is bad for your health.
  • We can use gerund after a preposition, for instance: She is bad at dancing.
  • We can use gerunds after phrasal verbs, for example: I'm looking forward to visiting my boyfriend.
  • It's important to remember which verbs need and don't need gerunds: enjoy, love, avoid and so on. 
  • Finally, in the verbs: like, hate or start, they are correct with gerund or infinitive.
